The adrenaline of fulfillment
When we were about to start the workshop, I realized we hadn’t divided the roles between us. I was counting on Laila and Amanda, who I thought had more experience with group dynamics and were more outgoing. However they were from the ‘website team’, it wasn’t their responsibility. The team looked confused, we looked at each other waiting for someone to take charge. It was time to start. I glimpse at Kristen, she was arranging the materials, I looked at Gemma and she was somewhere in a corner. Nick was taking notes, Laila pictures. Amanda was siting in front of the table so I thought I could take charge with her. I stood close to Amanda and started greeting everybody following the instructions for the first exercise. After a few minutes, everybody relaxed and little by little jumped in, decentralizing the facilitation. Eventually the boredom I was feeling about the workshop faded and I pulled Amanda aside and whispered to her: “Now I remember why I like design projects so much”.
The exercise went smoothly. It was very well organized and although I still didn’t feel we had created something innovative and brand new I could recognize the value of our service. I was also happy when the event was over, I had concluded a different learning process and unlike my first feeling when I joined the studio class I was now confortable of being amongst designers.
